In 1985\, he became executive secretary-treasurer of the Louisiana Oyster Dealers & Growers Association\, the state’s oldest seafood trade association\, a position he still holds. \nDuring 1990\, Dr. Supan changed career focus and became a Sea Grant research associate to begin working on his doctorate\, while on loan to the first commercial oyster hatchery in the Gulf region\, Gulf Shellfish Farms of Louisiana. There\, he began a 28-year part-time residency on Grand Isle\, while managing the oyster hatchery and training oystermen to utilize oyster larvae for remote setting techniques to produce their own seed oysters in order to become less dependent on the public oyster grounds\, where production had dwindled due to drought conditions and saltwater intrusion from 1985 to 1991. Once wild seed production rebounded\, the commercial venture folded and LSG acquired the facility. The repurposed Gulf Shellfish Farms became the Sea Grant Oyster Hatchery with Supan at the helm by 1993. \nDuring his tenure as director of the hatchery\, Supan’s research focused primarily on developing triploid oysters. Dr. Supan’s work was largely collaborative and stretched across state lines and institutions. He credits a 23-year alliance with professor Stan Allen\, currently of Virginia Institute of Marine Science\, with the production of the first tetraploid oyster broodstock for the Gulf region in 1998\, which drives triploid production across the Gulf today. \nIn 2015\, Dr. Supan transitioned the Sea Grant Oyster Hatchery into the Sea Grant Oyster Research Laboratory located within the Michael C. Voisin Oyster Hatchery on Grand Isle\, which was built with National Resource Damage Assessment funding resulting from the BP oil spill and currently owned and operated by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The hatchery\, designed by Dr. Supan\, is the first in the world to incorporate both RAS technology and LED algal lighting to produce oysters. Dr. Supan retired on December 31st 2017 after more than 30 years with LSU. (*Information and picture from: https://www.laseagrant.org/2018/supan-announces-retirement/)

SUMMARY:Sustainable Oceans Conference
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Oceans\nThe Sustainable Oceans Conference is an annual student-run conference led by the Master of Marine Management students of the Marine Affairs Program (MAP) at Dalhousie University. It is the only student-led conference of its kind in Atlantic Canada\, and has been running continually for the past 6 years. \nThe conference aims to explore multi-disciplinary approaches for creating healthy oceans and a sustainable future.  While the overarching message remains the same\, each incoming class introduces new perspectives\, themes\, keynote speakers\, and academic presentations that make each conference unique.  The conference is a free and public event that brings together an audience of students\, faculty\, members of the marine community\, and the general public. \n\n\nInspiring Happy & Healthy Oceans\nThe theme of the 2018 Sustainable Oceans conference is H2O: Inspiring Happy & Healthy Oceans. Nova Scotia is Canada’s self-proclaimed “Ocean’s Playground” yet there is often a disconnect between us and the ocean. This year’s conference aims to promote ocean literacy and inspire positive behavioral changes surrounding our oceans. Ocean news is often full of negative perspectives – we strive to highlight the positives in ocean research and management through our three subthemes: \n\nConnection – our personal or spiritual connection with the marine environment\nInnovation – new and inventive approaches to addressing complex ocean issues\nOptimism – recognizing the positive strides and solutions to improve the health of our oceans\n\nThis year’s conference will take place on Saturday\, September 22\, 2018 from 11:00am to 6:30pm with a reception to follow\, and Sunday\, September 23\, 2018 from11:00am to 3:30pm. Registration will begin at 10:30 am on both days. The conference will be held in the McInnes room on the 2nd floor of the Dalhousie Student Union building at 6136 University Ave. \nREGISTER TO ATTEND the 2018 Sustainable Oceans Conference \n\nThe organizers of the 2018 Sustainable Oceans Conference acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki\, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.

SUMMARY:CaNOE National Symposium 2018
DESCRIPTION:All hands are invited on deck in Newfoundland this summer to join CaNOE in navigating a course for ocean literacy in Canada.  Our aim is to pull together to develop our uniquely Canadian perspective on what it means to be ocean literate and help shape a national ocean literacy strategy. \nPresentations and discussions will explore four sub-themes: \nOcean literacy and culture\nOcean literacy and education and communication\nOcean literacy and science and technology\nOcean literacy and stewardship and conservation \nEnd of day workshop sessions will address specific questions to help identify local actions that align with a “roadmap” that is being developed to create an ocean literacy strategy for Canada.  One question will focus on the essential ocean science literacy principles\, already adopted by the US and the EU (in adapted form). \nOver the three days\, we will celebrate and learn from successful efforts in ocean education across the country\, including indigenous experiences\, and build a resources map to share best practices! \nOutcomes include a position document describing what ocean literacy means in Canada and common messaging that will be incorporated into a Canadian brochure on ocean literacy with translation into both official languages and as many Indigenous languages as possible. \nWe are excited to overlap our symposium with a meeting of the international AORA (Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance) OL Working Group and the 2018 Coastal Zone Canada Conference\, and look forward to building synergies and relationships!

SUMMARY:AAC 2018 Conference
DESCRIPTION:Aquaculture Innovation for Sustainable Future \n \nThe application of Genomics has had a revolutionary impact on the production of terrestrial animals/ From the use of genomic selection in dairy cattle to the use of epigenomics to understand previously unexplained sources of phenotypic variation\, genomics can help elevate the success of aquatic species breeding programs. The goal of this session is to provide an overview of the recent developments of genomic applications in Aquaculture focusing into 3 main areas: breeding\, epigenomics in aquaculture and functional genomics (especially nutrigenomics). This year we will try to focus on providing a stage for emerging genomics scientists to present their work\, and we encourage graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to submit abstracts. \nThis session will feature the latest research\, development and commercialization in Marine Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (MIMTA) and Freshwater Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (FIMTA or aquaponics).  Speakers are encouraged to discuss  progress in the different extractive components of IMTA systems (dissolved inorganic nutrient absorbers\, small particulate organic suspension feeders\, large particulate organic deposit feeders\, and mineralizing microbial components)\,the evolution of the IMTA concept\, who it is for\, and what will be needed to see the emergence of this innovative practice in the western world. As aquaculture expansion in Canada will most certainly come from more species than just salmon\, diversification will not only be key to maintain competitiveness of the industry\, but the IMTA multi-crop diversification approach (fish\, seaweeds and invertebrates) will likely play a role.  Speakers are encouraged to examine IMTA as an economic risk mitigation and management option to address pending issues such as: climate change and ocean acidification impacts\, the evolution of the regulatory framework\, embracing the integrated coastal area management (ICAM) and circular economy strategic approaches\, and proper valuation of the ecosystem services provided by extractive species. \nSuccessful aquaculture requires an understanding of the physiology of the organisms being cultured. Only with this knowledge does it become possible to meet their environmental requirements and thereby allow them to realize their biological potential. Physiology encompasses the integration of biochemical and molecular processes into important whole-organism responses such as growth\, sexual maturation\, osmoregulation\, disease resistance\, and the ability to withstand the stressors of being reared in artificial environments. This session will focus on understanding the impacts of captive rearing on the physiology of aquatic organisms and on optimizing the rearing environment so as to maximize physiological performance. \n  \nThe environmental sustainability and social license of the aquaculture industry relies heavily on the existence of an adequate regulatory framework for the management of sites.  In Canada\, provincial and federal regulators prescribe the methods used to monitor the environmental effect of aquaculture.  Many techniques are available to evaluate benthic health at an aquaculture site which include direct sediment monitoring (sediment chemistry\, benthic/faunal indices and DNA barcoding)\, video surveillance\, acoustic techniques and modeling approaches.   The adequate implementation of these techniques is at the core of the design of appropriate monitoring programs and subsequent management decisions. This session will examine environmental monitoring tools / techniques\, their limitations and how they could be better implemented as a basis for environmental management policies. Current research and “outside the box” thought processes on novel approaches to better assess the environmental footprint of aquaculture activities are encouraged. \n  \nShellfish production is highly dependent on developing technologies\, environmental factors\, husbandry practices and animal health. Understanding the influence of these variables is primordial in the establishment of a dynamic and vibrant industry in Canada. This session will focus on current research related to any aspect that can affect shellfish production\, such as deep water farming\, genomics\, predation\, diseases\, carrying capacity\, spat supply\, triploidy and climate change.

This program consists of classroom training in shellfish aquaculture productivity and HACCP risk analysis\, as well as individualized training sessions on standard operating procedure development\, risk analysis and risk control plan development. Classroom training sessions are scheduled for November. Individualized training will be scheduled through the winter. \nShellfish HACCP Risk Analysis Training \nAs presented by Perennia\, the HACCP system has been readily adopted internationally as a reliable means to identity food safety hazards and to ensure that they are controlled during production and processing. The principles of HACCP can be more widely applied however to any process to ensure that hazards are systematically identified\, assessed and controlled. For example\, for aquaculture producers\, this system can be used as a means to assess and ensure control of shellfish health\, environmental impact or other hazards that may affect productivity or regulatory compliance. The intent of the HACCP training session is to set out the basic principles behind the HACCP system so that producers can apply this system of management to improve production processes on their farms. \nThis training opportunity is appropriate for all scales of production and all levels of technical knowledge.
